1. Guest Post: Confessions of a Teaching-Focused Astronomer
From: Christina Richey via womeninastronomy.blogspot.com

By guest blogger Dr. Jillian Bellovary

In August 2016 I started a tenure-track position at Queensborough Community College, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system and located in Bayside, Queens. This job is my dream job, and one I’ve been aiming for for quite a while. But I didn’t always know this was what I wanted, and I’ve definitely felt like I’m not supposed to want a job like this. Thus I’d like to share my story.

2. LPSC Women in Planetary Science Annual Susan Niebur Networking Event 2017
From: Kelsi Singer via womeninplanetaryscience.wordpress.com

This year’s highlighted topic is Mental Wellness/Illness and Your Career.

Getting a PhD and navigating a career in science can be hard… and there’s a psychological cost to the endeavor that no one talks about. Please join us for a discussion with Linda Cantu, President of the Texas Branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), who will help us better understand what we can do for ourselves and to support others.

More details and registration information can be found at

4. The quest to reveal science’s hidden female faces
From: Cristina Thomas [cthomas_at_psi.edu]

by Dalmeet Singh Chawla

“Hilda Bastian was organizing a Wikipedia edit-a-thon for the US National Institutes of Health in 2015 to highlight the work of women scientists when she realized how difficult it was to find photos of them.

“I scanned through thousands of digitized photos in image galleries, went through Wikipedia  pages, and looked for obituaries in journals. It had a big impact on me,” says Bastian, who is based in Washington, DC and is an editor for PubMed Health, a health-information service from the US National Library of Medicine.”

5. Annual Prize to be named for Caroline Herschel
From: Jo Heaven [heaven_at_cantab.net]

The William Herschel Society (WHS), in Bath, England, intends to celebrate former resident Caroline Herschel's pioneering astronomical work with an annual prize. The format of the award is still to be decided, so the WHS chairman, Charles Draper, would welcome your ideas regarding the scope and/or nature of the award. Is a cash-prize preferable to lectureship with an honorarium? Should eligibility be restricted by age, by career-stage, by gender or by geography?

Please send your suggestions via the Society's contact form at
